Dame Asha Khemka DBE DL

Asha

In 2014 Asha Khemka OBE was made Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE). The first Indian-born woman for almost a century to receive the honour, it was awarded to her for services in education. Yet Dame Asha's road to success has not been easy. Born in rural India in 1951, she was married at 15 and spoke no English when she arrived in the UK with her family in 1978. It was in England that she embarked on a journey of self-discovery, rising from being a mature student to becoming Principal and CEO of West Nottinghamshire College in 2006. Now, with many glittering accolades to her name, Dame Asha is an inspiration to anyone wanting to embrace lifelong learning to achieve their goals. India Made Me, Britain Enabled Me is her remarkable story.
